I have always given my patient the following example to be able to explain the differences between a surgeon who is fellowship trained versus the one who is not.
Let us think that your body is equivalent to your very expensive brand name car you just bought. When you decided to buy that expensive car from the dealership you planned to enjoy it for the longest period of time. When that car requires maintenance or repair you basically have 2 available options. Option 1: take the car to your nice friendly neighborhood basic mechanic. Option 1 pros: May be a nice mechanic. Convenient. You did not have to do much homework to find an expert mechanic.
Option 1 Cons: Your neighborhood mechanic has only the basic knowledge required about engine mechanics. His knowledge is deficient about the advanced computer system in your car. He may exhibit lack of special knowledge about the specifications of your brand name and model (like torque specification, certain manifold pressures, electric wiring, computer programming…etc). He may have not invested enough money in buying advanced diagnostic tools or equipment to assist in diagnosing or troubleshooting the problem (note that modern auto technology require expensive diagnostic equipment that differ between models). He may not used the certified recommended lubes, fluids, oil or OEM parts and may go for the third part off-market brands which may void your original beautiful vehicle’s warranty. Repairs performed by this mechanic are not subject to warranty if the job was.
Option 2 pros:
1. Certified Technicians: Dealerships employ factory-trained technicians who specialize in your vehicle’s make and model. They’re more likely to diagnose issues accurately and efficiently and probably faster.

3. Warranty Coverage: If your vehicle is still under warranty, repairs at the dealership are often fully or partially covered—saving you money and protecting your coverage. More importantly, your original warranty is not void.
4. Latest Software & Tools: Dealerships have access to proprietary diagnostic tools, software updates, and manufacturer-specific repair protocols not available at independent shops.
5. Resale Value: Service records from an authorized dealership can increase your car’s resale or trade-in value, demonstrating proper maintenance with official documentation.
6. Recalls & Service Bulletins: Dealerships can check for open recalls or manufacturer service bulletins and fix them—often at no cost to you.
In our opinion, The only difference between your expensive precious car and your body is you can replace your car, buy repair parts or even trade it in but you can not do any of that with your body. Your body is irreplaceable and irreplicable. As you like to get your car repaired only once to save time and money, you basically (most of the time) have ONLY one chance to get things right with your body in surgical procedures.
That is why you should choose your surgeon and the facility very carefully.
